The Library Association has had a very active year. Following are some of the highlights:
- We redesigned our logo - updating our image and identity.
- We have a new website- www.rocklandlibraries.org which has been greatly improved, allowing users to access each Rockland library's web page directly as well as viewing a calendar of Rockland library events.
- In October 2004, LARC was represented at The RBA- the Rockland Business Association's Expo. It was a good opportunity for Rockland libraries to mingle with the local business community.
- In November 2004, LARC spoke before a panel of State legislators urging their support in overriding the Governor's 5% cut in aid to NY Libraries
- In January 2005, LARC held a well-attended information session for member library trustees and directors regarding direct access issues and realities.
- LARC created and distributed a petition that garnered almost 3000 signatures from the public asking the State legislature to support full funding to libraries that was eroded by 5% last year. These petitions were presented to our representatives in March 2005 at NYLA Lobby Day.
- Our biggest event of the year was the 2005 Larc Conference, Libraries: The Future Is Now! which took place on April 19. More than 185 people attended the 6 workshops that focused primarily on changes in the future of libraries.
- Our first Romance Tea, featuring Romance novelists, Mary Bly, better known as Eloisa James and Kathleen O'Reilly, took place on May 22, 2005.
- In September we hosted the 3rd Rockland Reads event-an event where all the community reads the same book! This year's selection was Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and the kickoff event took place on September 22 during Banned Books Week.
