Digital Collections

The Library Association of Rockland County’s Digital Collections at New York Heritage and HRVH Historical Newspapers provide an important portal to the public for access to local historical newspapers, images, maps, oral histories, and more. In June 2017, issues of the Journal News from its inception in the 1930s were uploaded to HRVH Historical Newspapers. This newspaper is popular, with over 10,800 visits and 687,000 page views in the first 5 months of 2018. The newspaper digitization program overall has an outstanding following with over 120,000 visits and over 8 million pages viewed in 2018. 2019 statistics show us on track to break 9 million page views and 180,000 visits to the Rockland historical newspapers at news.hrvh.org. The statistics above only represent usage of LARC’s historical newspaper collections. LARC also sponsors a collection of local history images on New York Heritage that are immensely popular with over 360,000 page views in 2018.

The Library Association of Rockland County is dedicated to preserving Rockland County’s local history. You will continue to see more newspapers, images and oral histories digitized in the coming year, including the Ramapo Valley Independent (1927-1954), plus more issues of the Rockland County Journal (1900-1915) and Our Town (1978-1982). In addition, the Rockland County postcards of the late Clarkstown Historian Robert Knight will be digitized and added to New York Heritage.
